The Best Places to Take Photos in the Tri-State Area (According to Yelp)
By Matt Hinkle · October 29, 2026
"Where should we take our photos?" is the first question almost every client asks me — and honestly, it's my favorite question, because the right location does half the work before I ever lift the camera. So I cross-checked the places Yelp reviewers rate highest around Hagerstown and the tri-state area (Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Virginia) against the places that genuinely work for a portrait session. Here's where the two lists meet.
A quick note on method: Yelp doesn't keep one official "best photo spots" list, so I pulled from its top-rated parks, nature trails, landmarks, and sunset views near Hagerstown, Chambersburg, and Harpers Ferry — then kept the ones with the light, backdrops, and room a real session needs. Ratings are as shown on Yelp in October 2026; they change over time.
1. Hagerstown City Park & the Museum of Fine Arts — Hagerstown, MD
Yelp: 4.8 stars (11 reviews), near the top of its nature-trails list for the Hagerstown area. The lake, the willows, the stone paths, and the columned rotunda at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts — this park gives you five different looks in one easy walk, which is why it's my first recommendation for families, couples, and seniors alike. The photo at the top of this post is mine, taken right there.
2. Devil's Backbone Park — Boonsboro, MD
Yelp: 4.6 stars (13 reviews). A creek, rock formations, and woods just outside Boonsboro. It's the pick for families with kids who would rather explore than pose — the best photos here are the in-between ones, and the shaded creek light is beautiful on a bright day.
3. Gathland State Park — Jefferson, MD
Yelp: 4.5 stars (10 reviews). The stone War Correspondents Memorial Arch is unlike anything else in Washington County — a dramatic, historic backdrop for couples and seniors, with mountain views right behind it. Quiet, uncrowded, and full of texture.
4. Washington Monument State Park — Middletown, MD
Yelp: 4.5 stars (21 reviews). A rugged stone tower on top of South Mountain and a sweeping view across the valley. It's a short uphill walk, so I'd save it for couples and seniors who are up for a little climb — the payoff at golden hour is worth every step.
5. Annapolis Rock — Myersville, MD
Yelp: 4.7 stars (9 reviews). The biggest overlook view on this list, out along the Appalachian Trail. Fair warning: it's about a 2.2-mile hike each way, so this one is for adventurous couples who want the mountains themselves in their story — and who plan their outfits and footwear with the trail in mind.
6. Jefferson Rock & Harpers Ferry — Harpers Ferry, WV
Yelp: 4.6 stars (12 reviews) for Jefferson Rock, which also lands on Yelp's sunset-view list for the region — one reviewer called the view "breathtaking," and they're not wrong. Below the rock, Harpers Ferry's historic streets, stone buildings, and the meeting of two rivers give a session a whole second look. There are stairs to climb, so I recommend it most for couples.
7. Caledonia State Park & Michaux State Forest — Fayetteville, PA
Yelp: Caledonia 4.0 stars (28 reviews); Michaux State Forest tops Yelp's sunset-view list near Chambersburg. Tall pines, mountain streams, and deep green shade — the woodsy look, done right. A great fit for families who want something quieter than a manicured park.
8. Cunningham Falls & Catoctin Mountain Park — Thurmont, MD
Yelp: Cunningham Falls State Park 4.0 stars (96 reviews); Catoctin Mountain Park 4.2 stars (56 reviews). A real waterfall, a lake, and mountain trails, all in one area. Water and rock make stunning backgrounds — just wear shoes that can handle a trail, and we'll plan the prettiest spots that don't require a hike in your good clothes.
9. Gettysburg National Military Park — Gettysburg, PA
Yelp: 4.7 stars (524 reviews) — by far the most-reviewed landmark on this list. Rolling fields, split-rail fences, and stone monuments as far as you can see. It's powerful, open country for seniors and history lovers. One thing I treat seriously: this is hallowed ground, and sessions there are done respectfully and by the park's rules.
Two more from my own camera
Yelp aside, two of my personal favorites are already on this website with photos I took myself: The Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown, and Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg — quiet evening light over historic fields. If a place means something to your family, that meaning photographs better than any rating.
Before we pick one together
A practical word: some locations have rules — and occasionally permits — for professional photography sessions. I never guess at those. When you book, I'll confirm any location details with you first, so there are never surprises. One thing to know up front: if a location requires a permit, rental, or access fee for a professional session, that fee is the client's responsibility — I'll always tell you the cost before anything is booked, and nothing is ever charged without your written approval. And whichever spot you choose, send me a photo of your outfits laid out before the session — color coordination is a big part of how I match your family to the location, and it shows in the final images.
Found a location you love? Head to Request a Date and tell me which one when you send your request — or ask me to recommend the best fit for your family, your outfits, and the season. Travel is included for sessions in the Hagerstown and Washington County area; for locations farther out, a travel charge may apply, and I'll confirm any travel details with you before booking. I'll provide the current estimated gallery delivery time when your session is booked.
