How to Choose the Right Portrait Photographer in Maryland

Choosing a portrait photographer in Maryland isn't really about finding the "best" one — it's about finding the right one for you. The photos will live on your walls and in your family albums for decades, so it's worth knowing what to look for before you book. Here's the honest checklist I'd give a friend.

1. Start with the style, not the price

Every photographer sees light and people differently. Look through portfolios and ask yourself: do these images feel like the photos I want of my family? I specialize in natural-light, on-location photography — real Maryland settings, real light, nothing overly staged. Another photographer might work mainly in a studio with dramatic lighting. Neither is wrong. But if the style in their portfolio isn't the style you want in your home, no discount will fix that.

2. Ask to see full galleries, not just the greatest hits

Anyone's best ten photos look great — those are the ones on the homepage. What you want to see is a complete session from start to finish: does the quality hold up across the whole gallery? Are people consistently sharp, well-lit, and natural-looking, even in the candid in-between moments? A photographer who happily shares full galleries has nothing to hide.

3. Make sure you know exactly what's included

Before you book, you should be able to answer: What does the session cost? What's included? What happens if the weather turns? With me, pricing is straightforward and published right on my website — a portrait session is $375, with no surprise fees (travel is included for local sessions in the Hagerstown and Washington County area). Every client signs a contract before their session, so the details are in writing for both of us. Whatever photographer you choose, you deserve that same clarity before any money changes hands.

4. Check that they're a real business

This matters more than people think. A professional should be insured and use a written contract: I carry insurance (and can provide a certificate when a venue asks), and I use a contract and model release for every session. If a photographer can't offer those basics, think carefully about what happens if something goes wrong on the day.

5. Pay attention to how the session will feel

The best portraits happen when people relax — and that starts long before the camera comes out. When you reach out, notice how the photographer communicates. Do they guide you? I give posing guidance throughout the session, so you're never standing there wondering what to do with your hands. And because color coordination photographs so much better, I ask every client to send me a photo of their outfits laid out before the shoot — it helps me choose the location and makes a real difference in the final images.

6. Choose someone who knows your corner of Maryland

A local photographer knows which Hagerstown and Washington County locations shine at golden hour, where the fall color peaks first, and which spots get crowded on weekends. That local knowledge quietly shows up in your photos.

A quick checklist before you book

If a photographer checks those boxes, you've probably found your photographer.
