What Does a Portrait Photographer Cost in Maryland?

"How much does a portrait photographer cost?" is usually the first question in my inbox — and it deserves a straight answer, not a sales pitch. What you'll pay depends mostly on what you're booking: a family portrait session, a senior session, and an all-day event are very different jobs. So here's how I'll answer it: first, what actually goes into a photographer's price — and then my own published prices, listed plainly, so you know exactly where Hinkle Photography Co. stands before you ever send me a message.

What actually goes into a photographer's price

The session itself. The type of session, how many people are in front of the camera, and how much ground we cover all change the job. A couples session at one favorite location is a different day of work than an event with a room full of guests, and prices reflect that.

The work around the session. Before we ever meet, there's planning: choosing the location, timing the light, and talking through your outfits. Afterward, there's careful editing of your gallery, image by image. Honestly, the editing usually takes longer than the session itself — it's where good photos become finished ones.

The business behind the camera. Professional equipment and backups, insurance, a real contract, secure gallery delivery — the unglamorous costs of doing this properly. They're part of the price because they're part of protecting your session and your images.

Custom work. Some jobs can't be priced off a list because no two look alike — a large or complex event, a multi-location branding shoot, an extended elopement. Those I quote individually, after I understand what you actually need.

My published prices

I keep one flat price per session type — no packages to decode, and no upsell waiting at the end. Here is the full list, exactly as it stands today:

Weddings are the one service I don't put a number on publicly. Every wedding is different, so I gather the details first — your date, your venue, the coverage you want, your guest count, and your priorities — and build a custom quote from there. Send an inquiry and you'll have real numbers in front of you before you decide anything.

What working with me includes

Every session comes with a signed contract — yours and mine, in writing, before we shoot. I'm fully insured, and I can provide a certificate of insurance on request.

Within 72 hours of your session, I'll send you a sneak peek of a few favorites while I finish your gallery. I'll provide the current estimated gallery delivery time when your session is booked.

One small step that makes a real difference: before every shoot, I'll ask you to lay out your outfits, photograph them, and send them to me. Seeing your colors helps me match the right location to your session — color coordination is a big part of how the final images come together.

Travel is included for sessions in the Hagerstown and Washington County area. For locations farther out, a travel charge may apply — I'll confirm any travel details with you before booking, so there are never surprises.

Paying over time

A retainer may be part of booking, and I set it case by case for each booking rather than charging everyone the same figure. When a retainer applies, it counts toward your total and is non-refundable. After that, I'm glad to split the remaining balance into monthly payments on your invoice, so professional photos fit the month instead of fighting it. Your gallery is delivered once the balance is complete. I accept Venmo, Cash App, an invoice payable by debit or credit card, or cash in person.

Ready to talk about your session? Head to Request a Date and tell me what you're planning — the session type, your preferred date, and who's in the photos. I'll confirm availability personally and answer with the exact price for your session. No guessing, and no pressure either way.
